He asks for a job and claims he has a reference from a previous Ponderosa hand that he worked with in Arizona. He earns the job by breaking the horse that threw Joe. Sheriff Coffee arrives and informs the Cartwrights about the robbery. He asks them to ride posse over the Ponderosa. They do, but to cover more area, they break into pairs. When Sam learns that Hoss will be going the direction of the gang's hide out, he volunteers to ride with him. Hoss stumbles across some suspicious markings and is investigating. Sam initially tries to make excuses, but when Hoss is down on his knee checking tracks, Sam pulls his gun. Fortunately, Joe arrives and stops him. Hoss asks why Joe has his gun on Sam and doesn't believe Joe when Joe says it looked like Sam was drawing down on Hoss. Charlie Trent used to be an Army scout. Now he's the town drunk. Hoss helps him regain his self-esteem when he has him volunteer to lead a gold-bearing troop through the desert where there's very little water. An Army wagon train carrying gold is in Virginia City getting supplies. When their scout, a large, bossy man named Cutter refuses to obey orders, Captain Pender fires him. Now he needs a scout who can lead them across the desert. Hoss' "friend", Charlie Trent, scouted for the Fremont Expedition, but now is a drunk. On one of his scouting missions, he lead them straight into an ambush and nearly everyone died. That's why he drinks. The Capt remembers Charlie from before the incident, and desperate for a guide, offers the job to him. Hoss promises Charlie will be there. Charlie finally agrees only if Hoss will go with him. Cutter has a small gang, and they had planned on stealing the gold once they got to the middle of the desert. Cutter thinks this is even better. All they have to do is let Charlie lead the wagon train, rob it, and kill everyone. People will assume that Old Charlie led the party and got lost in the desert, and they all died of thirst. The Cartwrights construct a grist mill to help neighbor Tom Edwards, a disabled man who bitterly blames Ben for his condition. Tom is being manipulated by hired hand Ezekiel, who's not only cheating him out of his money, but also intends to steal his wife. Ranchers are being killed, cattle stolen, and retired U.S. Deputy Marshall Denver McKee leads various posses after the suspects but never seems to be able to find them. In the meantime, McKee seems to have plenty of money to take care of his gorgeous daughter back home from schooling in the East. Adam, Hoss and Joe are on the trail back to the Ponderosa and are talking about a gal that Joe had picked up in town, when they hear a gunshot. They find an old man who was robbed of three years work and shot, but he couldn't identify the robbers very well. Hoss promises to get him a doctor, but before they even leave to call for one, he is dead. Ben comes to visit Denver, an old friend, and Miles the foreman is by the buggy hooking up the horse. It seems that Denver's daughter, Connie, is coming in from the East and Denver is extremely nervous. He is all dressed up and wants to make a good impression and has got the house fixed up, but is worried that she won't like her new surroundings. Ben asks Denver and Connie to a welcome home party. When an Indian saves Ben Cartwright's life from a near fatal knife attack by another Indian, Ben later gives the Indian and his pregnant wife a strip of fertile farming land. Unfortunately the land is next to a very racist farmer and things turn deadly. Ben is ambushed on his own property by the son of an Indian chief, rabid with hatred for the white man. Matsou, the Indian's brother, and Matsou's wife Hatoya, find Ben and take him back to their tent to nurse him. Matsou's brother (Largosa) comes to look for him, but Matsou hides Ben and forbids Largosa to enter his home. Matsou's brother tries to humilate Matsou for being soft "like a woman" ever since he married Hatoya; but he finally leaves without seeing Ben. It is the spiritual influence of Hatoya's living three years with a white couple that has led her to Christ, and Matsou's love and devotion to her compel him to respect what she says. Back at the ranch, Ike, who is living on land acquired from Ben, complains to Joe and Hoss and Adam that he refuses to live with "Injuns," after finding a skull of one of them on his property and glimpsing some of the tribe nearby. Joe and Hoss take their dates to a bizarre traveling carnival and Joe's girlfriend Jennifer disappears. She's abducted by the evil owner, Phillip Reed, and held for one million dollars ransom. Reed's girlfriend Della is jealous of the attractive hostage and spills the beans to Joe. He and Hoss tear the circus apart to find her, meeting resistance from the carny folk. Hoss and Joe take their sweethearts to a colorful and strange carnival for the day. Joe's recent girlfriend Jennifer Beale is abducted by the sinister owner, Philip Reed and his accomplice Gerner. Her father is Joshua Beale, the richest man in the Comstock. Gerner convinces Reed to hold her for a $1 million dollar ransom, and her father will gladly pay them to ensure her safe return. Reed's girlfriend Della Thompson is jealous of Jennifer and has second thoughts about the abduction. Hoss and Joe take notice of Jennifer's disappearance and travel deep into the bowels of the carnival, meeting fierce resistance from the carnival people at every avenue. Angry with the way a beautiful deaf girl is treated by her father, a sheepherder living in a remote mountain cabin, Little Joe takes it upon himself to teach her sign language, so they can communicate better. His plan backfires when the young woman falls in love with him and the girl's brutish neighbor resents her lavishing attention on the youngest Cartwright. Joe becomes friends with a deaf-mute girl named Ann Croft after he defends her against a stalker. A good portion of the episode recounts Joe's efforts to teach sign language to Ann. The friendship begins when Joe, en route to Placerville to tend to Ponderosa business, tries to educate Ann's father, Sam, about his deaf-mute daughter. He believes her condition is a curse from God and has no intention of helping her or gaining any understanding about it. He reveals that he wants to protect her by sheltering her at his home. Joe buys a book on sign-language and, after mastering some of the basics, begins to teach Ann how to communicate. Hoss mentors a lonely, mentally challenged man who, with superhuman size and strength, becomes extremely dangerous when angered. These efforts are undermined by a saloon girl who only wants this giant man-child to manipulate him. In one of the local bars in Virginia City, one of the bar girls tells what looks to be her beau that she is homesick. He gets annoyed and tells her to stop crying and that Memphis, Tennessee is a very long walk home. Joe and Adam come into the bar and one of the bar's workers tells Sherry, the barmaid to go and look after the Cartwrights. Sherry comes over to the Cartwrights and Joe promptly asks if she would like to have a drink with them. She says she would like to and Joe gives her a dollar for the beers. She says she wants to play blackjack, so they can have some champagne, but Joe just wants his dollar back so Sherry and Joe play a game of chase. And she accidentally falls and is caught by a large man that won't unhand her. She finally escapes, and tells him he is the ugliest man she's ever seen. The man walks up to Joe and asks him if he has anything to say to him. Joe says he doesn't and sits down. Sherry decides to see if the large man will buy her a drink, but he does not seem to care for her attention. She calls him stupid, and she leaves. Joe apologizes for Sherry, but the large man gets angry and hits Joe. A fight starts and when Hoss gets to the bar it seems he is the only one who can fight the large man. The fight goes on for an hour and fifteen minutes and the two decide that to stop fighting because they don't know why they were fighting in the first place. Sherry helps the man, named Arnie, get cleaned up and Sherry continues to flirt with Arnie. Adam and Joe decide to leave since they have already wasted enough time.
