La Piste de Santa Fe (titre original : Santa Fe Trail) est un film américain de Michael Curtiz, sorti en 1940. Plus film historique que western, la piste de Santa Fe prend position contre le fanatisme idéologique, incarné ici par John Brown et soutient discrètement les positions sudistes sur les bienfaits d’une lente abolition de l’esclavage. Le film est entré dans le domaine public en 1968 car United Artists n'a pas renouvelé son droit d'auteur. En 1854, une forte camaraderie unit sept jeunes officiers américains terminant leur formation dans la prestigieuse Académie militaire de West Point : George Armstrong Custer, Bob Holliday, Philip Sheridan, James Longstreet, John Bell Hood, George Pickett et J.E.B. Stuart. Ce dernier s'oppose à Carl Rader, un autre élève, partisan de l'abolitionniste John Brown. Une bagarre s'ensuit. Rader est chassé de l’armée pour ne pas avoir respecté la neutralité politique de celle-ci. "Jeb" Stuart et ses camarades, rejoignent ensuite la Deuxième Unité de Cavalerie cantonnée à Fort Leavenworth, au Kansas. Le film est centré sur la lutte entre l’armée (symbole du pouvoir légal) et John Brown qui maintient une agitation constante dans ce territoire avec l’aide active de Rader. John Brown, joué par Raymond Massey est un fanatique intolérant prêt à tuer et à sacrifier ses propres enfants pour la cause abolitionniste. La manière dont il interprète ce personnage persuadé d’agir au nom de Dieu finit par semer le trouble dans l’esprit du spectateur d’aujourd’hui. John Brown finit par quitter le Kansas.
