Happy Veganuary 2022. "To bring home the bacon", "eat the frog first", "mit jemandem ein Hühnchen zu rupfen haben"- our languages are very animalistic. alugha shows a few facts about veganism and about animalistic expressions here.

Estimated reading time:2minutesNew year, new habits. The editorial team at alugha had already discussed what these could be. One big international, global campaign going on right now is Veganuary. Veganuary is a portemanteau word composed of vegan and January. This campaign aims to encourage people to adopt a vegan(ish) lifestyle in the month of January and beyond.
There are many reasons for a vegan lifestyle. They range from health aspects to environmental protection to animal ethics.
For whatever reason an individual chooses a vegan lifestyle, it is clear that veganism is a global phenomenon. Every individual should think about this, because the state of our planet concerns us all.
Now, alugha does not provide vegan food, nor do we sell vegan clothes. Nevertheless, we can do our part. Alugha's CEO/CVO Bernd Korz has been vegan for many years. We also have numerous videos on the topic of veganism, sustainability as well as with vegan recipes. So if you want to find out more about this, click on this watchlist.
Last but not least, a few sentences about our language. In many languages you can find animalistic phrases and proverbs, which to a large extent also show how much humans want to dominate animals. Here are a few examples from different languages:
German: Zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe schlagen (to hit two flies with one swatter)
Eng: Kill two birds with one stone
Ara: عصفورين بحجر واحد (kill two birds with one stone)
Catalan: Matar dos ocells d‘un tret (kill two birds with one shot)
Ita: prendere due piccioni con una fava (catch two pigeons with one bean)
PETA has been campaigning for more animal-friendly language for years. One way of not having to "kill two birds with one stone" in might be to "feed two birds with one scone", as PETA suggests. Language is fortunately creative and there are many ways to find less animalistic expressions.
We are of course interested in what expressions there are in your language. Are there already creative, more animal-friendly solutions to this?
See you soon and have a nice Veganuary!
