Briefly introduce yourself: Who are you and what do you do?

Hi, I’m Mareike. After long studies, I’m finally part of the working society, despite the corona-outbreak. Furthermore, I didn’t begin my work-life in just any company, I’m a computer linguist at alugha – a company with a very important mission in my opinion.

Which three words describe you best?

Clumsy, caring, inquisitive

What sets Mareike apart from Mareike today 10 years ago?

While the Mareike back then hated the taste of coffee, the Mareike today cannot imagine a day without coffee. Furthermore, today I’m able to do a real push-up (but not really more than that, to be honest).

What is your favourite thing to do in your free time?

First up, it would be martial arts, more precisely Wing Chun (a Kung-Fu style). That’s a great way to release stress and frustration and not only promotes my self-defense skills but the development of my mind. During the summer I like to work in the garden: plant some cucumbers and tomatoes because they taste 10x more delicious than those bought in the supermarket. Besides, it’s very relaxing to work in the garden and watch the little plants grow. However, it can be less relaxing if an army of aphids take over your plants and you have to fight them. In this case my kung-fu skills aren’t helpful. In addition, sometimes I like to eat a good piece of cake (or two) in my favorite café reading a good book.

What are your tasks at alugha?

My task at alugha is to develop an AI-solution for our automated transcription, the speech synthesis and translation of the multilingual videos.

What guided you to alugha?

A job search on Xing. I didn’t know alugha before. But I hope alugha will be globally as known as YouTube.

Why do you like being an alughian?

At alugha the people count and not just the views. The work is exciting and on top meaningful. And because the alugha team is really amazing, you feel welcome right away.

Where do you see yourself and the company in the future?

After the internship period at alugha, I would be happy to become a “permanent” alughian. Concerning alugha, I believe it will be the most popular platform worldwide – and leave YouTube behind.

What is your own big dream?

There’s a lot: living in a comfortable house with a large garden with my own family and two dogs. I want to see the elephant park “Elephants Without Borders” in Botswana and volunteer there for a few weeks. Achieve the black belt in Wing Chun. Ah, and of course, speak 9 languages fluently. That would be great.
