Debido a los efectos del calentamiento global el arrecife lucha por mantenerse vivo. En 2016 y 2017, grandes partes del arrecife sufrieron graves daños por el ciclón y el "blanqueamiento del coral". Pero muchos temen que los problemas que enfrenta este hermoso y diverso ecosistema submarino continuarán empeorando a menos que se tomen medidas serias contra la cantidad de contaminación y gases de efecto invernadero que producimos.
