Euroopan unionin tuomioistuin on EU:n lainkäyttöelin. Sen tehtävänä on varmistaa, että EU:n toimielimet ja jäsenvaltiot noudattavat unionin oikeutta ja että unionin oikeutta sovelletaan samalla tavalla kaikkialla EU:ssa. Tällä varmistetaan se, että EU perustuu oikeusvaltioperiaatteelle, joka on kaikkien demokratiaa noudattavien yhteisöjen perustavanlaatuinen piirre. Euroopan unionin tuomioistuin antaa kaikkien unionin kansalaisten elämään suoraan vaikuttavia ratkaisuja sellaisilla aloilla kuten kuluttajansuoja, ympäristö, yksityisyydensuoja, yhdenvertainen kohtelu ja työntekijöiden oikeudet, ja näin se varmistaa sen, että unionin kansalaiset nauttivat unionin oikeuden suojaa täsmälleen samalla tavalla riippumatta siitä, missä EU:n alueella he oleskelevat.
