Zucker fließt im Phloem die Pflanze hoch- und runter. Das Phloem verwendet aktiven Transport, um Nährstoffe wie Glukose und Aminosäuren in der ganzen Pflanze zu verteilen.
Glukose wird in den Blättern durch die Fotosynthese hergestellt. Glukose wird in den Blättern zu Sucrose konvertiert, was dann die Phloemgefäße betritt, genau wie Aminosäuren. Sie müssen dann über die ganze Pflanze in jede einzelne Zelle transportiert werden.
Die Gegenden der Pflanze, in denen Sucrose hergestellt wird, werden die Quellen genannt, und wohin sie geliefert werden, nennen sich Senken.
Das Phloem verwendet aktiven Transport, da sich die Sucrose entgegen seinem Konzentrationsgradient bewegt von geringerer Konzentration wo es hergestellt wird zu einer höheren Konzentration in den Phloemzellen.
