Jimmy Wheeler un fotógrafo de Nueva York conduce su auto a través de Kentucky camino hacia California, cuando al costado de la carretera ve a un niño pequeño caminando solo, y se ofrece a llevarlo a su casa. Cruzando un horrible camino en medio de la nada, finalmente llegan a una vieja casa en una granja desolada, en donde el niño vive con sus numerosos hermanos, y Carol Ann, una mujer que cuida de ellos. Cuando los hermanos insisten en que se quede con ellos, Wheeler decide continuar con su camino, sin embargo descubre que su coche esta averiado, y se ve obligado a quedarse en lugar.
