Mamma Mia - film, musical, world spectacle - a story like that of ABBA was, at most, only written by Michael Jackson. Chiquitita, tell me the truth. We explain the ABBA phenomenon!

ABBA - once a Swedish pop group, today a legend in music history. The four Swedes Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad - or ABBA for short - formed one of the most successful bands in history. But how did they achieve their international breakthrough again? Right, there was something! With “Waterloo”, the pop band won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974, whereupon they became famous worldwide. It is not without reason that ABBA is linked to the co-founding of new international pop music. Their most successful songs were, among others, Mamma Mia, Thank you for the music, Dancing Queen or Super Trouper.

Unforgotten

Are definitely the colorful, eye-catching, trendy costumes of the band members. Such an outfit can never be missed at any 80’s party! The men in the band, Ulvaeus and Andersson, were mainly responsible for the texts and composition of the songs, while the women, Fältskog and Lyngstad, functioned as lead singers. According to Universal Music, the band sold more than 380 million records with this concept, which makes them one of the most successful bands ever. Unfortunately, the band decided to go separate ways in 1982. But their success wasn’t over yet.

ABBA revival

What happened in 1992 is what lay the foundation of the ABBA revival: During a U2 concert, Andersson and Ulvaeus sang their hit “Dancing Queen” with singer Bono. What followed was the release of numerous remakes of old songs. On the album Abba Gold, every fan can find all the biggest hits. Although the album did not contain any new material and all songs were already known, it stayed at number one of the charts for weeks in several countries. Discos began playing ABBA songs again. Once again, this revival is unprecedented.

What followed wrote history

After the ABBA songs had gained their “old but gold status”, the band’s history was performed on the boards that mean the world. Even today, “Thank you for the music” is touring through various countries. One of the reasons why the musical “Mamma Mia”, in which the story of Donna and Sophie is told, is so world-famous and is still being performed, is certainly the ABBA compositions. The “Mamma Mia” musical premiered in London in 1992, it’s screen adaption in 2008.

Success also in Latin America

Why do we even bother and write an article about ABBA? Well, first, because we like to, secondly because we wanna “thank them for the music” and thirdly - and most importantly - because ABBA understood the alugha principle. Due to their success, they decided to offer their songs multilingually. Lots of them were also recorded in Spanish, since they were also pretty successful in Latin America. Of course, we made the songs multilingual for you - on alugha!

With this in mind: Gimme Gimme Gimme! Listen to it!

We wish you a Super Trouper week!

Your alugha team
