Have I entered the bass forest or what?
0:07 → 0:09
Amazing!
0:12 → 0:14
What kind of bass is this?
0:15 → 0:17
Wow! How many strings does this one have?
0:17 → 0:22
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ,6. Amazing, 6 strings!
0:25 → 0:29
Wow, what a big body, let me take a closer look.
0:32 → 0:33
Amazing.
0:37 → 0:42
Holy cow, look at that! A real jazz bass.
0:42 → 0:43
Amazing!
0:47 → 0:48
Mhh.
0:49 → 0:50
Hey.
0:52 → 0:54
There you are.
0:54 → 0:59
Guys, with this bass I will give you tips for playing bass.
0:59 → 1:01
Welcome to Bobby's Bass!
1:11 → 1:14
Welcome to Bobby's Bass here on Hotodi TV.
1:14 → 1:18
I am Ralf and today I am going to explain the parts of an electric bass.
1:18 → 1:19
Ok, let's get started
1:20 → 1:24
First of all, this is the soundboard.
1:25 → 1:29
Manufacturers use various woods to build the soundboard.
1:29 → 1:37
But I won't go into detail about that now, because we will visit a renowned bass manufacturer around here in one of the next Bobby's Bass workshops.
1:37 → 1:42
He can explain the making and production of a bass much better.
1:43 → 1:53
Nevertheless, I am going to explain some parts to you because, as I said, they are similar for nearly all basses.
1:54 → 1:57
Here, at the end, is the bridge.
1:58 → 2:01
You insert the strings here.
2:01 → 2:10
Also, there are screws in this bridge which help me adjust string action and string clarity.
2:12 → 2:16
And what you see here is called pickups.
2:16 → 2:27
They are used to transmit the vibrations of the string to the potentiometers via electromagnetic induction and then via cable to my amplifier.
2:28 → 2:32
These pickups can be positioned in different ways.
2:32 → 2:42
In this case, there's one that's near the bridge and a pickup that is pretty far up, near the neck.
2:43 → 2:49
The positioning leads to different sounds.
2:49 → 3:00
I'll just play a string and switch between the front and rear pickups so you can hear the different sounds these pickups produce.
3:24 → 3:31
Ok, I have just used them, here below are the potentiometers.
3:32 → 3:34
First, of course, one to control the volume.
3:39 → 3:40
I used the second one too.
3:40 → 3:47
On this bass it just allows me to switch between the front pickup and the rear pickup.
3:48 → 3:50
And then the bottom ones.
3:50 → 4:02
The manufacturer has included various potentiometers that help me raise or lower the bass, mid-range or treble.
4:02 → 4:04
A short sample.
4:08 → 4:10
Now more bass.
4:12 → 4:14
And less bass.
4:17 → 4:18
Or more treble.
4:26 → 4:27
Or less treble.
4:31 → 4:35
The position of these potentiometers varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
4:35 → 4:40
Just check what you need or what you like.
4:40 → 4:43
As I said, this one has a three band eq.
4:43 → 4:53
Some manufacturers only have bass controls or treble controls, it can differ.
4:54 → 5:00
To be able to play the bass while standing, the manufacturer has added pins here so that we can simply attach a strap.
5:00 → 5:06
This also allows me to play the bass in an optimal position.
5:07 → 5:08
What else is there?
5:08 → 5:13
This is the neck with the fingerboard.
5:13 → 5:17
On this bass, it was screwed to the bass from the back.
5:18 → 5:26
On the neck is the fingerboard, which is divided by frets.
5:28 → 5:32
These frets help me play different notes.
5:32 → 5:35
Each fret up is half a note up.
5:37 → 5:42
The manufacturer has added various markers to serve as visual aids.
5:43 → 5:52
In this case, a dot in the third fret, in the fifth, in the seventh, in the ninth and in the twelfth fret.
5:52 → 5:56
At the end of the neck is the saddle.
5:56 → 6:02
It is simply used to run the strings properly over the fingerboard.
6:03 → 6:10
And last but not least this is the head plate, to which the tuning pegs or machine heads are attached.
6:10 → 6:14
Obviously, the strings are attached to them,
6:14 → 6:18
since I have to be able to tune my instrument.
6:19 → 6:28
And these pegs help me tune the bass by tightening the string to raise the pitch,
6:28 → 6:33
or by loosening the string to lower the pitch.
6:34 → 6:36
Short example of what that sounds like
6:42 → 6:44
That was loosened, now I'm tightening the string
6:48 → 6:50
and the pitch is raised.
6:51 → 6:56
That's it for now, those were the essential parts of an electric bass.
6:56 → 7:02
I am looking forward to our next session, until then, your Ralf Bobby Bopp and Bobby's bass.
