Unter Transpiration versteht man die Verdunstung von Wasser über die oberirdischen Teile einer Pflanze (also den Blättern und Stängeln).
Durch die Verdunstung von Wasser über diese Teile - meist den Blättern - entsteht ein Saugdruck, der Wasser durch die Pflanze nach oben zieht. Dies wird als Transpirationssog bezeichnet.
Durch Osmose gelangt das Wasser aus dem Boden über das Konzentrationsgradient in das Zytoplasma der Haarwurzelzelle und weiter zu den Xylemgefäßen.
Durch die Xylemgefäße gelangt das Wasser von der Wurzel über den Stamm zum Blatt. Neben den Blattzellen, die Wasser für die Photosynthese benötigen, hält Wasser auch die Zellen prall, was die Pflanze unterstützt. Im Blattinneren wird den Xylemzellen Wasser entzogen, um das durch Transpiration verlorene Wasser auszugleichen.
