The principles of persuasion are a set of psychological rules to influence others. In his book "Influence", Robert Cialdini presents 6 main principles: reciprocity, scarcity, authority, consistency, sympathy and consensus. Later, he added a 7th principle: uniformity. Knowing these rules can be helpful in either influencing others or protecting yourself from the techniques when applied to oneself.

In the following exercise, students will learn about influence and the 7 principles of persuasion.
Have the class watch a sales presentation from the movie Wolf of Wall Street and find out what prompted the buyer to buy the shares.
Watch Sprouts' video on the 7 principles of persuasion
Rewatch the sales pitch and ask the class to identify the persuasion principles used in the video.
Divide the class into 6 groups.
Each group is assigned one of the principles and has to give examples in which they have seen how it has been applied - or in which they have applied it themselves.
