[English] WISDOM 1 Video - A German-Vietnamese Initiative

"The Mekong Delta is one of the most vulnerable regions in Asia. The inhabitants of the Mekong Delta are confronted with various challenges, such as climate change and the consequential sea level rise, the salinization of soils and aquifers, or the increase of meteorological extreme events (e.g. typhoons). Further challenges are the urbanization and the intensification of agriculture (e.g. by aqua culture) resulting in the deterioration of the coastal mangrove belt, and an accelerated degradation of the water quality by sewage water from industry and agriculture. The WISDOM project -- that stands for "Water-related Information System for the Mekong Delta, Vietnam" (www.wisdom.eoc.dlr.de) -- is a German-Vietnamese research application project. 60 scientists from research fields, such as hydrology, geochemistry, socio-economy, geography, information technology, and earth observation develop decision support tools through interdisciplinary research, with the aim to foster the development of integrated water resources management, to design adaptation methods in the context of climate change, as well as to design strategies for the management of water resources in such a dynamic region as the Mekong Delta.
