Imagina un segundo, un rascacielos, el más alto jamás construido, de 100 kilómetros de altura. Podrías tomar un ascensor desde la planta baja de ese rascacielos hasta el comienzo del espacio, hasta un bar celestial desde donde podrías mirar la Tierra, e incluso lanzarte al espacio. Una persona promedio podría pasar meses y años de entrenamiento espacial y experimentar la majestuosidad del espacio. Este concepto se conoce como el ascensor espacial, y es más ciencia ficción que cualquier otra cosa, de momento. Esto se debe a que aún no se conocen materiales que sean lo suficientemente fuertes para construir en el espacio exterior.
