I den här videon kommer vi att upptäcka hur celler tar in användbara ämnen och tar bort avfall med tre transportmetoder: diffusion, osmos och sedan i andra delen kommer vi att titta på aktiv transport.
Utbytet av material sker mellan celler och deras miljö, över cellmembranet. För att göra detta utbyte så effektivt som möjligt, vissa organismer har utvecklat specialiserade utbytesytor som alveolerna i lungorna, eller rothår i växter eller nefroner i njurar.
Beroende på vad som utbyts och vilken riktning längs koncentrationsgradienten saker och ting färdas kommer att avgöra om diffusion, osmos eller aktiv transport kommer att användas.
Diffusion är den process där partiklar sprids ut från varandra. De flyttar från hög koncentration till ett område med låg koncentration, ner koncentrationsgradienten tills de är jämnt fördelade.
Osmos är mycket lik diffusion men bara för vatten. Det är rörelsen av vatten in i eller ut ur en cell. Återigen är det rörelsen från en utspädd lösning (så hög koncentration av vattenmolekyler) ner koncentrationsgradienten till en mer koncentrerad lösning - så låg koncentration av vattenmolekyler. Vattenmolekylerna rör sig över ett delvis permeabelt membran.
