Ohne Behandlung ist es unwahrscheinlich, dass die durch ein Trauma verursachte PTBS verschwindet, und es besteht die Gefahr, dass sie zu chronischen Schmerzen, Depressionen, Drogenkonsum und Schlafproblemen führt, die wiederum die Arbeitsfähigkeit und die Interaktionsfähigkeit einer Person beeinträchtigen. Einige Symptome einer unbehandelten PTBS sind: Ablehnung positiver Veränderungen, das Bedürfnis, alles zu planen, starke Angst vor dem Versagen oder Erfolg, Konzentrationsprobleme, Schwierigkeiten, um Hilfe zu bitten, selbstverletzendes Verhalten usw.
