En 1569, Gerhard Mercator presentó su mapa mundial al público por primera vez. La carta de 1,34 m por 2,12 m se le dio el título: «para uso marítimo». Más tarde se dividió en 20 hojas y se publicó en un libro. Una espera larga para los capitanes del mundo.
