In 1980, Benjamin Libet wanted to find out whether our brains were preparing for movement before we were aware of it. He set up an experiment to monitor brain activity and found that our brain becomes active 500 milliseconds before the conscious decision to move. What does this say about free will?

CLASS ACTIVITY
In the following activity, students will learn about Libet's experiment and free will:
• Invite students to close their eyes and imagine an animal. When they are done, ask them to write it down on a piece of paper.
• Ask them which animal it was, and see if there are any similarities between students.
• Ask them why they thought of this particular animal. Why this one and no other?
• Show the class Sprouts' video about Libet's experiment.
• Now ask them if they believe that their choice of the animal was conscious and the product of free will, or if they think that their brain and how it works somehow influenced their choice before they even knew it.
• Now ask them what they think of free will.
