Wie er berichtet sind er und die bewusstlose Frau Opfer des skrupellosen Colonel Stark, für den er eine hydraulische Presse reparieren sollte. Als dies nicht gelang, dreht der Colonel durch und wurde gewalttätig. Holmes und Watson beschließen dem zwielichtigen Colonel einen Besuch abzustatten.
