🇭🇳 Honduras - President Addresses United Nations General Debate, 77th Session (English) | #UNGA

Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento, President of the Republic of Honduras, addresses the general debate of the 77th Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 20-26 September 2022). The President of Honduras, Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento, today (20 Sep) said industrialized nations “are responsible for the serious deterioration of the environment, but they make us pay for their onerous lifestyle.” In her address to General Assembly General Debate, Castro Sarmiento said, “we find unacceptable this arbitrary world order, in which there are third and fourth category countries, while those who believe themselves civilized do not tire of making invasions, wars, financial speculations and crucifying us with their inflation again and again.” She said, “every caravan of migrants fleeing the dictatorship that has been mounted for more than a decade is a heavy loss for our country and their families.” The Honduran President said, “this process of exodus caused by neoliberal injustice generates more unemployment and ties us to an undesirable dependence” noting that “paradoxically, emigrants generate more foreign exchange income than many of the traditional exports.” Castro Sarmiento in office since January 2022, is Honduras’ first female president. ---------------------------------------- The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote. The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter. The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world. But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.
