Breeding strategy of the mouthbrooder
An amazing strategy of parental care. In the mouthbrooding fish glossamia aprion and neoarius graeffei, the males keep the fertilized eggs in their mouths. This requires a lot of discipline: during this time, mouthbrooding males can hardly eat anything. This way, the larvae are protected from predators. It is not guaranteed that the eggs contain only their own genetic material. It can also come from other males. Or the males carry the eggs of more than one female. Whether there is going to be offspring, depends on whether the male can control itself.
