Warning Offices Radioactivity Measurement in the Cold War
Our nationwide monitoring network for radioactivity has its roots in the so-called warning offices. During the Cold War in Germany - i.e. during the conflict between East and West after the Second World War - they were responsible for warning the population in the event of an attack with NBC weapons. ABC stands for atomic, biological and chemical. Our colleague Hans Werner Landfried used to work in a warning office: In this video, he explains how the offices worked and what this has to do with our current monitoring network.
