(قىرعىز) Kyrgyzstan 🇰🇬 - President Addresses United Nations General Debate, 77th Session | #UNGA

Sadyr Zhaparov, President, addresses the general debate of the 77th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 20-26 September 2022). Following the violent Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border clashes last week, the president of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Zhaparov, told the General Assembly that his country is “ready to continue the negotiation process” with Tajikistan “through civilized and legal ways.” Addressing Member States today (20 Sep), Zhaparov said, “Taking into account that our trust has been weakened by the recent lawless actions of our neighbor, we are ready to continue negotiations and welcome mediation efforts by international organizations including the UN, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).” According to Zhaparov, “despite all previous negotiation and agreements, the Tajik side, with ill intention, attacked the border and civilian objects along the entire perimeter of the Kyrgyz-Tajik borders.” The President of Kyrgyzstan also informed that about 240,000 of civilians have been evacuated from the border settlements and are now being provided with necessary assistance. “The Kyrg side does not claim foreign land, nor does it intend to give a centimeter of its land to anyone. We are convinced that all border and internal issues should be resolved over at the negotiating table and there is such a readiness and will on our part,” said the head of state. Zhaparov concluded by saying that “the most important issue today is the adoption of urgent measures to ensure security and stability in the border areas, decreasing tension among the local populations and strengthen the trust between the two states.” “We are always ready for negotiations,” the Kyrg president reiterated. Last week, the Secretary-General called on the leadership of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan to engage in dialogue for a lasting ceasefire. António Guterres said that both sides should take full advantage of the existing mechanisms on the ground to defuse tensions. The Secretary-General also said that the UN stands ready to assist in identifying a sustainable solution to the border disputes, if requested by the sides. ---------------------------------------- Watch this video in English: https://youtu.be/jn6Cg8aRpJU UN Web TV https://media.un.org/en/asset/k1r/k1rvsw08cm Screenshot credit: UN Photo/Cia Pak #UNGA #UnitedNations
