When we lose someone or something that is important to us, we often go through 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, negotiation, depression, and acceptance. Each stage serves the purpose of helping us cope with the loss. This complex emotional reaction to a loss is unique to each person and is not always linear.

CLASSROOM EXERCISE
In this exercise, students will learn about the 5 stages of grief and how it develops.
Ask the class if they have ever lost someone or something that was important to them and how it made them feel.
Write on the board the different feelings that students can think of.
Ask them if they think these feelings occur in a certain order.
Show the class Sprouts' video about the 5 stages of grief.
Ask the students if the emotions they describe fit the 5 phases.
Ask the class if they have experienced these periods in their lives, and explain that they may feel grief over smaller things, such as the loss of a favorite toy.
