Le Criminel (The Stranger), ou Criminel en Belgique, est un film américain réalisé par Orson Welles, sorti en 1946. eu après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'inspecteur Wilson traque les criminels de guerre allemands. Il suggère de libérer Konrad Merinke en espérant que, grâce à une filature, celui-ci le conduise à Franz Kindler, un important responsable des camps de concentration. Merinke cherche en effet à retrouver Kindler et ses propres recherches le conduisent aux États-Unis, à Harper1, une petite ville du Connecticut. Franz Kindler y a refait sa vie sous le nom de Charles Rankin ; il est devenu un professeur aimé et apprécié, et se prépare à épouser Mary Longstreet, la fille d'un juge de la Cour suprême. Lorsque Merinke Orson Welles a fini le tournage avec dix jours d'avance sur la date prévue. Il considérait toutefois cette oeuvre comme son film le moins bon : Il n'y a rien de moi dans The Stranger (...).
