🇩🇪 Germany - Chancellor Addresses General Debate, 77th Session (English) | #UNGA

Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, addresses the general debate of the 77th Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 20-26 September 2022). Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz told the General Assembly, “We have an obligation to our peoples. We owe them a global order that allows them to live in peace, which protects their rights and opens up opportunities for education, health and development for them. Such an order doesn’t come about by itself. Defending, further developing and strengthening it – that is our task as the United Nations.” Delivering his speech at the General Assembly high-level debate today (20 Sep) in New York, the German Chancellor said that the UN Charter “calls on all of us to uphold its purposes and principles.” He reiterated, “we mustn’t stand idly by when a major nuclear power armed to the teeth – a founding member of the United Nations and a permanent member of the UN Security Council no less – seeks to shift borders through the use of violence.” Chancellor Olaf continued, “there is no justification whatsoever for Russia’s war of occupation against Ukraine. President Putin is waging this war with one single objective: to seize Ukraine. Self-determination and political independence do not count for him. There is only one word for this. This is imperialism!” He reiterated, “our message is this: we stand firmly at the side of those under attack. For the protection of the lives and the freedom of the Ukrainians. And for the protection of our international order.” On climate change, Chancellor Olaf said, “we stand by our pledges to support emerging economies and developing countries in their efforts to reduce emissions and to adapt to climate change – with new just energy transition partnerships, for example.” He said, “we will not abandon the countries that are struggling the most in the face of loss and damage as a result of climate change.” --- The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote. The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter. The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world. But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.
