When we move to another country, we are often exposed to a culture that is different from ours. We have to go through four phases of transition: honeymoon, frustration, adaptation and integration. Some people are enthusiastic about the foreign culture for months, while others are frustrated on the first day. And then there are those who experience such a strong culture shock that they leave before they can adapt.

CLASS EXERCISE
In this activity, students will learn about culture shock and its causes.
• Ask the class what they like about their country or city: traditions, events, food, transportation, etc.
• Ask students if they have ever been to another country, even just on vacation, where things were very different. What did they like? What was more difficult?
• Show the class Sprouts' video about culture shock.
• Ask students if they have ever experienced culture shock?
• Ask students what they think might shock people,
when they come to their country or city: What specific traditions
or behaviors are different from other countries?
• Ask students how a person might learn to adapt when they are in
their country is coming and how they could help people to see the positive sides of the
culture.
