An ihrer Nordspitze trotzt seit 25 Jahren die Antarktis-Station GARS O’Higgins (German Antarctic Receiving Station) des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) mit einer 9-Meter-Antenne diesen Bedingungen und ist an 365 Tagen im Jahr mit einer kleinen Mannschaft besetzt. Mehrere zehntausend Male hat die Anlage in dieser Zeit Datenpakete von Satelliten wie TerraSAR, TanDEM-X oder BIROS empfangen, hat Kommandos an sie gesendet oder auch dem Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie (BKG) als Radioteleskop gedient.
