Els estromatòlits són dipòsits de calci. Les pedres poden tenir fins a 3500 milions d'anys. Durant molt de temps es creia que només eren fòssils fins que es va descobrir una colònia “viva” d'estromatòlits a la costa oest d'Austràlia el 1956.
