Tooth decay is the most common preventable chronic disease among children in the United States. If left untreated, it can negatively affect a child's physical and social development, as well as his or her school performance. All children enrolled in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) have coverage for dental services—including check-ups, x-rays, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, fillings, and more. Parents and caregivers, if your child has Medicaid or CHIP, call their doctor or other health care providers to schedule any appointments such as routine dental check-ups they may have missed. Families without health insurance may be eligible for free or low-cost health insurance available through Medicaid or CHIP and they can enroll at any time of the year.
