Bronfenbrenner's Ecological System - 5 Forces That Influence Our Lives
In 1964, most people believed that the reason people become poor was a matter of biology and had little to do with the environment in which they grew up. Urie Bronfenbrenner, a young psychologist, helped us understand that a child's environment also plays a role. When he was invented to explain his ecosystem theory to the U.S. Congress, he made history.

EXERCISE IN THE CLASSROOM
Give each child a piece of paper with Bronfenbrenner's 5 systems and have them draw the people and forces that affect their lives in each of the circles. They are then asked to explain to a classmate the connections between the different forces and their effects on their lives. Later, you can ask your students what they know about poverty? Do they also exist in your country and if so, how would a poor child's systems differ from theirs? You may even want to have your students simulate a convention and create an action plan to combat poverty in your country. Who knows, maybe one day it will come true ;).
