Lungenlose Salamander haben keine Lungen, sodass sie nicht in der Lage sind, einzuatmen, um in ihrer Umgebung etwas zu riechen. Stattdessen benutzen sie eine spezielle Rille auf ihren Oberlippen, die Wasser und Geruchspartikel zu ihren Nasenlöchern transportiert und ihnen Zugang zu den Gerüchen um sie herum verschafft! Diese Amphibien erhalten Sauerstoff durch ihre Haut sowie durch die Schleimhäute ihrer Münder. Wie Geckos und Anolis können lungenlose Salamander ihre Schwänze abwerfen oder autotomisieren, wenn sie in Gefahr sind. Einige von ihnen geben auch giftige Chemikalien über ihre Haut ab, die sie für potenzielle Fressfeinde unangenehm schmecken lassen. Lungenlose Salamander benötigen feuchte Gebiete, um zu überleben, können aber im Flachland bis hoch in den Bergen gefunden werden.
