Péter Horváth – Passionate controller Never start quitting and never quit starting – Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Péter Horváth has taken this motto from the philosopher Cicero to heart his whole life long. On February 3, 2017, the successful entrepreneur and university professor celebrates his 80th birthday. Péter Horváth has accomplished much in his life and he still intends to do much more. Now professor emeritus of the University of Stuttgart, who previously set up the first chair for Controlling in Germany at the TU Darmstadt, he is seen as the pioneer of Controlling in the German-speaking world. First published in 1979, his benchmark book “Controlling” is now in its 13th edition – with Chinese and Russian translations about to be released. Additionally, he has authored more than 40 text books and is the co-editor of the magazines “Controlling”, “Wissenschaftsmanagement” (Science Management) and “Familienunternehmen und Strategie” (Family Businesses and Strategy). He has been awarded honorary doctorates at the Corvinus University, Budapest, the European Business School, Oestrich-Winkel, Germany, the University of West Hungary in Sopron, and the University of Tartu, Estonia, in recognition of his scientific achievements in Controlling. 85 university graduates researched their PhDs and laid the foundation for their careers under him. Hungarian-born Péter Horváth, who fled to Germany in 1956, also used his unbounded passion and energy as an entrepreneur to create a company of worldwide renown. Headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, Horváth & Partners today have over 700 employees around the world and are regarded as the leading international management consultants in the field of corporate performance management and one of the best employers in Germany. As Vice-President of the Supervisory Board, Péter Horváth still plays an active role in the company. As a “little side project”, in 2001 he founded the non-profit research institute IPRI (International Performance Research Institute). In the meantime, he has donated half of the shares in IPRI to the University of Ulm, Germany, and at the same time established an endowed chair for Information Management there, too. “Slow down” or “stop” are concepts alien to Péter Horváth. For this reason he also actively sponsors art, science and international understanding, which is why he set up the Péter Horváth Foundation in 2002. With an annual sponsorship budget of around 200,000 Euro he, for example, funds scholarships at the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart, supports the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Stuttgart, and annually endows the Award for Sustainability Projects in Industry (“Green Controlling”) and a PhD Dissertation Prize. Additionally, he holds voluntary positions in a wide range of cultural institutions: on the University Council of the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart (2006-2015), as Vice-President of both the Business Club in the Stuttgart House of Literature and the Adolf-Hölzel Foundation in Stuttgart-Degerloch, or as Member of the Board of the Patrons of the Baden-Baden Festival Hall. He is also very active in his private life. He has run the New York Marathon 22 times and still today he can be found running round the track at the Killesberg Stadium in his adopted hometown of Stuttgart. On top of that he hits up the gym for fitness training at least twice a week. Picture credits: see German-language version (https://youtu.be/yRfmawQwq5o)
